This estate home was designed as a winter sanctuary for a Northern European business owner and his family. The clients valued privacy and wanted a home that would suit both their social and business needs. The time difference necessitated that the owner works hours during which the rest of the family might be socializing. As such, his study was designed with separate access to the entry courtyard. This provided him a quiet space to converse, do business, and smoke while the rest of his family utilized the rear pool and outdoor spaces. This area also served as a more intimate conversation spot and sported an outdoor fireplace. To maintain privacy, the entry courtyard was walled and the wings of the home were oriented to block views of the pool terrace area. We also provided a service suite on the main floor for the staff. During the spring and summer, while the family was in Europe, the main portion of the house could be shut down so that only service sections were accessible.
"The House of the Mornings". Named for a celebratory folk song, there could be no title more apt for this sprawling, Spanish-style estate. The owners, a couple from New York, needed to accommodate and entertain hundreds of people at a time. The party wing of the house hosts a large dance hall and covered terraces and pool as well as ample off-street parking for guests and food trucks. Above the great hall is a balcony for live musicians. An additional terrace provides a quieter space for more intimate conversation. This wing also provides two full master suites for long term summer guests. The private wing boasts stunning views of the property as well as a wine cellar, indoor and outdoor dining areas, spacious family room and kitchen, and an outdoor pizza oven. Originally designed as a summer house, the owners loved it so much that they sold their East Coast businesses to live at "La Casa" year-round.
This legacy estate home was designed to last hundreds of years, utilizing natural materials that only look better over time. The owner wanted to pass the estate down to his eldest daughter and to her children after her. It incorporates a show kitchen, working kitchen, and separate adult and child dining areas. The great hall, game room, and bar open up to a very large porch. There are two separate home offices so the husband and wife could work independently. The children also have their own wing of the house, including individual sitting areas attached to each bedroom and a large shared playroom. The master suite is separate from the rest of the house, allowing for complete privacy and quiet. A private, high walled courtyard with a bar and jacuzzi services the master wing. The separate pool house hosts changing rooms and a sitting area. A spacious flower garden separates the main house from the two-bedroom guest cottage. There's also a stable for four horses.
This Tuscan style estate was designed for a large corner lot in a gated golf course community. The ultimate goals of the design were to create a sense of peace for the owner's mother and to maintain privacy from neighbors. The entire front section of the house serves as a separate mother in law wing. The bedroom suite opens to a large, quiet patio with a fireplace. This space is secluded from the main living area and is sheltered from the noise of the pool area and children's rooms. Connecting this wing to the rest of the estate is a huge living room that opens to the flowers and fountains of the entry courtyard. The great hall and kitchen open to a private courtyard with a covered porch, pool, and bar. Upstairs, the four children's suites share a large play area. The master porch overlooks the pool and boasts a distant view of the Pacific ocean.
The house was designed as a series of courtyards to sit well on a steep lot overlooking a valley. The main part of the house is entered through the midlevel courtyard and contains a great room, kitchen, and dining area. These rooms have a stunning view down the slope to the valley below. The children's bedroom suites wrap around the upper courtyard. The lower courtyard hosts a game room and bar in addition to a pool and fire pit.

Bifold doors between the great room, kitchen, and back porch can be opened to create a large party space.

Berne was designed to take advantage of a small, steep lot in an established older neighborhood. The lot slopes upward dramatically from the street. To reduce the cost of grading, the garage was set into the basement at the steepest part of the slope. This allowed for the main floor to sit flush with the most level section of the property and create a large walkout to the backyard. The main level also enjoys windows on all sides, an added benefit of the basement garage. The master suite and laundry room are located upstairs with the children's rooms.
